Lesson Title: Test Day

State Standards: GLEs/GSEs

PS1

National Standards:

Context of Lesson:

This is the final lesson on the properties of matter and using them to identify an unknown substance. Students will be taking a final exam which will review and connect everything that has been learned in the past two weeks. This unit will be preceding a unit on the states of matter which will delve more deeply into the molecular aspect of matter.

Opportunities to Learn:

  • Depth of Knowledge

  • Prerequisite Knowledge
    • Students will need to have been present for the past 2 weeks of lessons, learning about chemical and physical properties and changes as well as applying them to identify an unknown.
  • Plans for Differentiating Instruction- Students will be given the entire period to work on the exam which may be more than enough time for most students to complete. Also, students will be able to ask questions during the test.
  • Accommodations and modifications- Students who need extra time will be allowed to take a few minutes longer to finish up the exam as soon as they need too. Giving the test as a full period should be ample time for most students to do well.
  • Environmental factors- Students will need to be quiet, and not socializing during the test.

Materials

Teacher- Copies of exam(in assessment section)
Student- writing implement

Objectives:

  • Students will apply their knowledge of matter(properties, forms, change types) in a written test.
  • Students will explain how properties of matter can aid in identifying a substance.

Instruction:

  • Opening:

    • As students are entering the room I will give them a few minutes to express any last minute misunderstandings then will ask them to clear off their desks and stop chatting.
  • Engagement:

    • I will read over the exam briefly once it is handed out to students, making sure that students understand what each question is asking.
    • Students will be given the remainder of the period to complete the assessment.
  • Closure:

    • Students will be asked to hand in the exams.
    • I would probably at least give the students a rough idea of what the next unit will be covering in this class and what to be prepared for next period.

Assessment:

Exam-() Students will be assessed formally through a written summative exam of the unit. Students will be required to draw on all the information from this unit to succeed.
